The turbo on my 300tdi just started making a strange noise. When it initially engages it sounds normal but if I step on it there is a loud hissing noise. I haven't popped the hood yet but I'm guessing its either a hose leaking and pressure escaping or perhaps a bearing going bad? No clue what I'm talking about though, just guessing. Should I be worried?

Is it smoking upon acceleration more than usual? Check the hoses going to the intercooler and from the intercooler, it sounds like you have a boost leak somewhere, I've had it happen in my vw tdi a few times, if you ignore it the hose will slice open more and you will lose power. If its a boost leak then it is nothing to worry about, i drove a couple hundred miles to waterfest and commuting before i got my replacement hose. I taped up the hose to help retain some boost.

Check for proper lubrication.

sounds just like boost lline eak. hissing is not a sound I've associated with a failing turbo.

Pretty sure it's the hoses. I did the timing belt not too long ago and those silicone intercooler hoses sure are slippery. May not have retightened them enough.

It only happens at higher speeds and higher boost pressure. Haven't checked for excess smoke because I already have excess smoke. Need a timing tune up after the belt change but haven't gotten to it.

Lube? Where exactly?

Higher pressure means the air will escape faster, and will result in the louder whistle, its one of your hoses, if you didn't tighten it enough, thats even better, its a free fix!

I had one that seemed to have a higher whistle sound while the turbo was spooling up. It was much louder than the others. It turned out to be the turbo bearing going bad.

To check for leaks, Shopvac blower to the turbo inlet.

Problem solved. Not sure how it happened but I lost the hose clamp that attaches the silicone hose to the intercooler. It can't slip off but at higher pressures it would leak. Buying another one today.
