300tdi Turbo Issue / Failure?

Can anyone advise on the following:

Stock 300tdi

The following symptoms happened all of a sudden. It definitely sounds like these noises arecoming from the turbo area. Sometimes abarely noticeable grinding noise. Sometimes a loud grinding noise. Sometimes a Ďtickingí sound. Sometimes no unusual sound.

The turbo still winds up, but there seems to be a bit ofpower loss under load and there is a bit of black smoke out the tailpipe underload. The engine / turbo are believed tohave about 70k miles. Oil level and qualityare good.

Iím thinking the bearing has gone lose and the impeller isrubbing. What do you think? And Iím also assuming that there is norecovery at this point. The 90 wasdriven about 3 miles under this condition. What are my options as far as rebuilding or replacing? Iíd like to keep a stock set-up.

Thanks, Keith

take your boost hose off from the turbo and check for turbo play. there should be very little. if you are hearing grinding, that is the biggest concern. grey/blue smoke is what you would see if a seal has blown. nonetheless if you have play in the impeller shaft and/or you can see wear marks on the walls where the impeller is rubbing, you are on a countdown to catastrophic failure. at this point, your turbo can probably be rebuilt. if you let it seize up, you may be looking at a full replacement which is more expensive.

there is no reason to modify from a stock setup. a turbo is a part, and it wears over time. just don't delay.
