I dont know if I am at my limit of speed but when the engine gets to 58mph it starts to cut out.

My Izusu cruised at 70mph

What gearing do you have?

Cruising at 70 should be no problem. 85 with suitable gearing a little tune up.

Which LT77...there are different possible gears?

What gears in the transfer case?

If you don't know, tell us the serial numbers. It could be anything since having an LT77 and a 300TDI is not exactly SOP.

At 58 mph, what rpm's are you showing? The Bosch injection pump (IP) does have an internal limiter that can't be adjusted. I believe that upper limit's in the range of 5,000 - 5,500 rpm's.

Early box with .83 fifth. Also lovely weak layshaft bearings.

Need the serial of the transfer case. There are a bunch of possible ratios.

Either on the back below the PTO cover or an the left side. There is also usually a ratio sticker on the back.

There should be two numbers and then a "D". Like 28D..... That is what we need.

OK, 1.667 ratio.... http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co...d&productId=45

1.667 * 0.8314 * 3.542 = 4.91 final drive ratio. I assume normal 32" tires? Say 650 revs per mile.

58 mile/hr * 650 rev/mile / 60 min/hr * 4.91 engine revs per wheel rev = 3085 rpm. So that is reving pretty high, but it should still keep going to 3800 or so.

First something is not letting the engine rev up. Check timing, lift pump, fuel filter, air filter first.

Second, the gearing is too low. Changing that would make highway driving a lot nicer.

Wow, I will look into these areas and check them. I am pretty impressed with you calculations. I has went to the website you mentioned that is how I looked for the serials. but it didnt show the side as you mentioned. I took a picture of it for saving.

my tires are 235-85R 16s

I'm having similar issues D110 200tdi 230 tranny and I put a 1.4 box in (had a 1.6 so I know the first poster's pain) serial #22D249197E and I just can't get going. Takes everything to get up to 60-65 on flat road in 4th and when I drop it into 5th I can barely hold it engine doesn't sound like its revving high (no tach). T case out of a V8 110. I'm thinking gears are too tall so I can't get to the proper shift points cause I can't rev high enough. Also I think it's running hot at that speed in the flats. (infrared therm at the temp sender housing shows 220-230 deg F, currently having issues with temp gauge another long story)

No, a TDI should pull 1.4 gears with no problem and cruise at 70 mph all day long. If not, something is wrong.

That's what I was thinking. It sure where to start though: injection pump timing off? The engine was just rebuilt as a F'ing washer had made its way into the 4th cyl so new piston new head gasket rebuilt by a good shop but I don't think they tuned it when they were done: I might have wanted it after spending 6 months there. So I just don't know?

When my fuel filter was plugged, my limit was about 60 mph. I'd change the fuel filter 1st.
