300TDI smoking on start up

I had my Defender in a river a couple of weeks ago and submerged the intake. My 300TDI is now smoking white smoke on start up and for the first 500 meters of driving, then it stops.
I have changed the air filter, and the fuel filter, i have completely drained the gas tank. I do not have a seperater at the rear by the back wheel.
Perhaps a injector is bad.
Does anyone have a Part Number for the injector?

Did we not have this thread already? My guess is a bent con rod. It is what commonly happens when you hydrolock one of these engines. Your symptoms match low compression in one cylinder.

Do a compression test. If one is lower than the rest, pull the head and check piston stickout. It is easy to pull the head. On a 300TDI, I believe changing a con rod can be done with the engine in the vehicle.

Yes we had this thread, but the sugestions of changing the fuel filter, intake and sediment filter, as well as draining the gas tank have not worked. once the engine is run for a few min it runs fine with no other symptems.
If the conecting rod was bent then wouldnt i have other symptems or a knock. (although hard to hear in a diesel). It has lots of power and feels great on the highway at 120k.
A compresion test can be done by testing at the injector, right?

What color is the smoke? Are you sure that its not just a result of not being warm enough yet (glow system)?

No, they make no weird noises and run fine with a bent con rod. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. The cylinder with the low compression won't ignite when cold. One bit of acceleration and it gets hot enough to start ignition and all seems fine.

I know it sounds like a big deal to pull the head, but it is an hour job. It is very simple.

Some Googling...

Usually the easier kits to get a hold of use the glow plug holes.

Harbor Freight has a surprisingly good compression tester for diesels. Comes with a bunch of different threaded nipples for different motors. I have one for my BJ60 and it had the correct adaptor.
