300Tdi Engine Smoking

First test drive, no bonnet, smoke coming out of engine block. Can't tell where exactly, but something is close to catching on fire. After stopping, the smoke clears fairly soon, and no sign of oil or anything burning.

Ideas?

No. And although it was coming from center upper part of engine, maybe from that side, I did not see that it was coming from the turbo.

Leaky oil feed or drain on turbo dripping onto something hot?

What is the color of the smoke, does it have any particular smell? Sounds like something isn't hooked up or paint burn off.

I had the happen recently and it was the gasket between the turbo and the downpipe. Look for soot on the side of the block or elsewhere and it will give a clue as to where the source is.

It is greyish smoke.

I'll be running it again today. I'm going to hook up the PSI, Temp, and EGT before running it to warm again....

My guess is a bad ring that is pushing massive pressure up thru the valve train and out the valve cover or whatever the path of least resistance happens to be. AKA the "Pedro effect" in honor of his 19J that had this.

dude, don't fall apart. have a beer and relax. buy a few cans of brake clean and get things cleaned up first. slowly check all hoses, lines for connection security. check fluid levels, oil filter and check the valve cover gasket.

Is there any history on this engine? Has it been rebuilt recently?

I second relaxation.

There's no way that anyone here can diagnose this online for you, but we can spur you on.

You can do it!

My 300Tdi was smoky, smelly, sooty and all for a week or two after I first installed it.
It was suckin air here, leakin diesel there...
I just thought they were like that.

It had been sitting for months.
Now it runs great and I cant hardly make it smoke even when I want to...

Just get your gauges hooked up, run it a bit and report back.

Just posted the Rebuild manual.

Have a beer, get some wrenches and fix this freakin' lump!

It's a Rover. They do this.

Tame it.

Thanks, I have the manuals. Was hoping to not have to use them for a while since I thought I had paid to have the engine dialed in.
