300TDI Colorado Registration

Hi everyone,

Currently have a 97 300TDI registered in WA state. We are moving to Denver this summer and was wondering about the process to register the vehicle in CO. I'm concerned about getting the VIN flagged and then being out of luck. If anyone has any experience or insight, I would be grateful. Thank you.

Best regards,

Nick

Are you military? If so, you can do what I do and keep it registered in your home-of-record state. In my case, that's Texas, where there are no smog tests in my home county. Colorado registration also sucks because they charge a hefty use tax every year. On my 2011 Tundra, it was over $1,000. By registering my 110 in Texas, I paid a one-time sales tax and then it's only something like $40-50 a year in registration fees.

If you have a title you should be fine for tags/registration. They have a fit with states that don't issue titles. The fees are a percentage of your sticker value depreciated every year. It's probably only 100-200 for a 1997 vehicle at this point, we just did a 2006 vehicle and it was less then $300. You can call the DMV for the county you are moving to and they will tell you over the phone based on the VIN what to expect.

You have to do emissions in the metro counties/front range. Search around where you are moving and get the emissions done before you show up to the DMV. The more paperwork you have ready for them the smoother it tends to go.

Best to do the research yourself. Here's a start.

http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite.../1185957917898
http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite.../1186648384011

Where I live (not in CO since my D90 is full time 4x4, they can't put me on the standard Dyno to do an opacity test under load so I have to go and get a state exemption slip every year before I can get a tag.

Do Washington & CO both have fuel type on the title?

CO does. If the WA doesn't reflect that, then there may be some more fun in store.
