I resemble that remark.

Mine does it too. So does my 1985 BMW 524td. The 300tdi has about 120K on it & has done it from the start in 2001. The garage thing sucks, so I simply push each vehicle out of the garage to start and avoid the smoke inside.

I leave the doors shut for a bit myself. Kill off the weak brain cells. You should try it! JK

My wife leaves the house after I do each day. She complains that the garage smells of diesel exhaust. I guess I could start parking outside. I'm not going to push the Defender out each morning.

Got the answer from a tdi expert over here today. It's a mechanical controlled injection pump that is at min fuel-delivery during start up. As the starter motor brings the engine only to a speed that is below normal idle the fuel quantitiy is too high during the first revs (or in other words, it's not enough air for the injected fuel). This results in black smoke...

Funny. Me too. I'm not allowed to leave before my wife (unless its 30+ minutes before).
