300tdi belt tensioner came off!

So while on a trip the bolt/stud holding the belt tensioner to the front of the engine (300tdi water pump housing/bracket actually) pulled out, which in turn shredded the belt. When I examined the bolt I learned that it had previously been helicoiled and it pulled the threads out when the bolt came loose...
Anyone had this happen before and repaired it successfully? Any suggestions?

Thanks
Frank

Mine had been previously helicoiled (and not well), so I went up on size and loaded it up with lock tight red just in case. Works fine. Much better than the alternative of replacing the entire cover.
The fact that yours suffered a violent ending may make repairing with a second helicoil less successful.
I would imagine that stud simply ripped right out of the hole if the entire tensioner fell off.

It's soft material your working with so be careful and unless you plan on removing the radiator and perhaps the entire breakfast, you need a compact right-angle drill, so keep that in mind when you're planning your attack.

Good luck

And they are so reasonably priced

I placed another helicoil in the hole after recutting the threads with a small amount of jb weld which allowed me to get it off the highway and to a radiator shop (ended up needing a radiator as well when the pressure build up caused a leak) but not sure it will get me home (3+hours) repaired the way it is... guess I'll find outnon our way back north. Thankfully my wife was very understanding as she does not really get the whole 'rover' thing

Good luck. BTW, I mis-spoke. It's the water pump housing bracket, not the time cover. part no ERR3736. RDS has them for $425.

Here is a used one in the UK on ebay.co.uk for under $100 and they ship to US.

A machine shop could weld up the hole and re-drill & tap the threads,

David,

Thank you very much for the offer! I had to rent a car as we were on our way for a family vacation so I am currently not driving it. I will be heading home next Saturday and Sunday and will have about 3-4 hours that I am going to try and limp it home. If I don't make it, I will have to contact you.

Thanks again,
Frank
