300 TDI options?

I have a 1988 Defender 110 LHD it currently has a 2.5 turbo diesel engine. Just not enough power for holding 70 mph up the hills of Colorado at altitude.

I am thinking about a 300 TDI with the R 380 transmission. Is this a good choice.

I have located a fella in the UK who imports them. Any suggestions on a stateside engine?

Any comments on my engine selection ?

Also I am currently speaking with Julian at global rovers about this. Any comments on his reputation?

It won't run circles around a modern 2016 SUV, but the 200/300TDI will be a big improvement.
My favorite engine is the Isuzu 4JB1-T (2.8 Liter 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel).
We put one in a 110 and the owner tows a heavy water trailer up a CO Mountain.
If he is close you should do a test drive.
He is about 10 miles north of Lyons, CO.
Looks like he is about 1 hr 10 minutes away.

If your intent is to hold 70 mph up hill at altitude I'd recommend avoiding a diesel engine that is smaller than 5.9 liters.

Just do a GM gen IV swap using Nick's parts. You will have the power and the convenience of an auto and the drive ability of a modern GM pickup or SUV. In the end you will have spent only slightly more for the GM swap but will not have a 17-26 year old engine that is barely getting by. You're trying to drive a 30 year old car like a new auto, put a new engine in it.
