300 tdi oil type for old engine

I know there have been past discussions of engine oil types etc and everyone has an opinion. But, here is my question. I have a higher mileage 300tdi and have been using Shell rotella T. Is it advisable to switch to a synthetic motor oil at this point? I change my oil about every 5k miles. I do all Highway and the miles rack up quickly. I also have some oil leaks and usually need to add a 2 quarts between oil changes. will the synthetic leak worse?
