300 tdi coolant flow

My shop manual indicates that the coolant flow (Engine Cold) to the heater core from the engine goes from the pipe above the head, to the heater core and back into the hose barb fitting in the head.
Does this flow reverse when the thermostat opens?
I am using a 12v coolant pump to pump hot coolant to a heat exchanger and don't want to have the coolant pump fighting the engineered flow of the water pump.
Thanks.
