3 wire fuel sender

OK, so I have a good rear harness for a 2002+ (td5 or 300tdi - not sure which) that I want replace my existing with (old one is hash at the rear frame exit). This is the one running through the frame. Already have the 2002 LED instrument cluster installed and mostly working (except the low fuel light - I was missing the third wire)

so I gain back the third wire when I add the harness - and can deal with the wiring through the bulkhead.

However, my existing (new, of course) fuel sender is a two wire. Having a hard time figuring out the p/n three wire sending unit for a diesel (side entry sender - not the top entry pump/sender combo)

any help?

I can add a photo of the harness three wire connector at the sender if it'll help

Mine is all buried up now, what are the colors of the wires? You may be able to trace it backwards.

wires are black, Black/green, slate/black. I have no trouble tracing them from the sending unit connector to the front harness connector. I have the schematics for the dash as well.

Trying to find the actual fuel level sending unit that mates up to this wire config/connector.

anyone?

As you know I have no real insight to add... But I did look online for a bit and found a td5 water in fuel switch. Looked to go on a rear filter by the tank with a switch on the bottom of the filter. I thought I would mention in case it has anything to do with the extra wire.

My guess would be black - earth and the other two - one for the gauge and one for the low fuel warning light?? Just a guess........

thanks - not my exact issue - but I think it points in a direction: there appears to be an adapter harness that would go from my connector to the sensor. As far as I can tell, my harness (YNN000171) is for a non-fuel pumped tdi (so probably a 300tdi) because my harness doesn't have the white/purple (WP) wire that runs the pump - but it does have the modern 4 pin AMP connector.

My RAVE only goes up to 2002. (My harness is 2007 build) - but only shows two wire fuel sensors in all cases (unless a TD5 with sensor and pump unit - but even then, the sensor is two wire) - and the wiring for that is only Green/Black (GB) and slate/black (SB). Solid black (B) goes to earth (as does SB back at the cluster) - so I'll splice in my old harness sensor connector to the new harness - abandoning the B connection - and wire it per the 2002 diagram I have. I'll see what happens at that point....

2002 diagrams attached for ref.

RAVE is finished, everything is now accessed online, through a JLR subscription service called TOPIx -

http://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/i18n/index

Anyone can register and access to owner information is free, access to workshop information has to be subscribed to, but this can be for as little as one hour for a few $$$

However, some kind chap on http://www.defender2.net/forum/index.php has subscribed and downloaded a load of info

He's made it available for anyone to download, here - http://www.defender2.net/forum/post54419.html#54419

You might need to login to the forum to see his post.
