3.9l rover v8 performance upgrades and cat back help needed

Hi,

Please I have a defender 110 with a 3.9l rover v8 installed, I am having a disco 2 v8 auto transmission put in, and would like to know any cheap performance mods I can do, using oem parts from other cars if needed as I am in Nigeria and don't have access to aftermarket parts. I just want more torque really, will dual cone air filters improve performance?

There is currently no ac compressor as u can see from the pic, I will be installing ac, as it originally had factory ac.

I also want a cat back exhaust so I would like any help pics sketches etc on what setup to use, I would like a power increase and a nice deeeeep grunt, I want to use oem parts from other cars silencer muffler etc, my welder can bend the tubing if I get a good diagram

Thanks in advance for your help and input

If I remember correctly the auto box from a Disco 2 is electronically controlled? I would use one from and earlier Disco 1 or a classic Range Rover if I were you.

If you want more power from a 3.9 the first/best thing to do is improve spark.

X2. You want an LWB trans or any RRC/D1

What I see in the pic is an old 3.5liter. If you are changing to 3.9 with fuel injection you have a ton of work to do getting it to work in the Defender. Also an auto transmission and air conditioning will suck 20 hp right off the top so you need to do stuff like a performance cam and headers to offset the loss.

I saw those strombergs and thought the same thing, but I don't know what's possible with mods and actual displacement. Just knew it wasn't a 3.9 efi.

Afaik there were never any 3.9 with carbs. So that in my book is a 3.5.
If you want more power, going to an LS drivetrain would work.
Alternatively, Try getting a complete 4.6 D2 auto drivetrain including ECU to o2 sensors and lokar shift adapter.

I can't get an ls drive train, will have to work with the 3.5 I have to cut costs, so please any mods will be greatly appreciated, which headers can I use to increase power and a proper cat back system?

Please what headers can I use to increase power? I want a cat back exhaust so please help with selecting oem headers from another engine as that is what I will be able to find here as no performance parts are available from aftermarket suppliers only used oem parts are available

Skip the auto and install a 5-sp. Lower gears (probably hard to find at the pick in pull) or smaller diameter tires will give you more torque.

Could be a low compression 3.5 or a high compression 3.9 block with an earlier carb manifold on it? It's an old Land Rover and he is in Africa, anything is possible but upgrades and power gain strategys will be similar.

Either way check the carbs for restrictor plates. Land Rover detuned the V8's for the utility models by using restrictor behind the carbs and different engine timing.

Don't bother with exhaust mods unless you can find exhaust manifolds off of a P38 Range Rover. They are the best.

Improve the spark before you try anything else. Old Rover V8's need a good strong spark to run properly.

My 2c.

It's an American engine from a Buick 225. Highly doubtful that you'll find any performance parts in Africa. Just drive it
