I have typically found you need at least 2 quarts to go from off the dipstick to full, but let us know how much you end up using.

Ok 9 quarts now and the dip stick says to still add more. My dip stick measures 21 3/4 inches from the end to the top (top where the ring is at). Could anyone with a 3.5 check to see if the length is the same.

Thanks in advance,

Brett

That is to much No more then 7 You are going to cause damage. Take some out until you find another dipstick assembly

Is a diptsick from a D90 good for that engine? If so, I can send you one. Too tired to go out and measure it right now, but will at some point if that helps.

I just checked the manual - it says that oil capacity with filter replacement for the 3.5 liter V8 should be 11.6 US pints or just shy of 6 quarts. This is from the Land Rover V8 Repair Operation Manual Supplement from 1981.

On another forum (Stage One) an Australian measured his dipstick to the bottom of the collar to be 539mm or about 21.25 inches. If you are measuring to the top of the collar then yours is right.

Thank you all for the info, I am going to drain the oil this weekend and start over. Looks like I have the correct dipstick, maybe it is installed wrong as I did not have any oil on the dipstick after 7 quarts.

Thanks again,

Brett
