255/85R16 KM2 Discontinued---WTF!

The long venerated BFG 255/85R16 that many of us know and love is discontinued. Crap. Here I am getting ready to order tires for me trailer to match my truck and now I am thinking I better rethink the axle I am building to make sure that I have proper clearance for my tires if I go a size wider.

I really like the 255/85R16 look, style and function---what is my next best choice?

Guess I need to think about what my next tire is going to be--I would like to stay around the 33-34" range and I prefer to stay around the width or slightly wider, but not "Jeep" wide, if you know what I mean...

Where'd you hear that? There was a thread on Dweb about a month ago where someone said that, and then someone posted this:
"The reason for the stop in production is so our plants could start including the European stamp of approval on the sidewall of the tires. That stamp simply makes the tires legal to use in the United States as well as Europe. This will be the only difference between the two KM2's as they will be made and look the same (plus the ECE symbol).
Sincerely,

Jon

is this going to be like when people started hoarding twinkles and paying $75 for a box of them?

I pray that this is correct!

Man I'm finding nothing on BFG website or on TireRack...time to panic? Or time to send Jon in the customer service department a fruit basket?

I didn't hear it through BFG, just that it is not on their site and the folks at Tire Rack said it was a (relatively) low volume tire and they were discontinuing it. I really want to verify it--I don't want to hoard/save tires as they degrade over time, but I just might if I really have to... Or I switch the trailer to the "new" tire and as my tires wear out on the D90 I use that new brand. I don't want to buy into a discontinued tire if that is the case... I am going to reach out to BFG and see what they say.

Meh. Good time to try the 285/75 GY MT. Interesting the KM2 is not available in that size.

Welcome to last month. This has been churned on EXPO and IH8Mud extensively.

Pizza cutters (255/85/16) KM2 are only out of production. According to BFG they are short on capacity for the new KO2s and had to hold on a few low selling sizes. And, BFG says 255/85/16 and 285/75/16 will go back into production in June 2015. So no need to hoard.

As of last week Tirebuyer.com has quite a few sets still in stock. I got a set delivered for $960

Wait, so are you saying the KM2's are permanently out of production...or just temporarily and they will go back into production in June?

I have Toyo Open Country M/T in 255/85-16 on my truck, and I love them.

The 285x75's seemed to go out of production from time to time as well. Twice when I thought I would switch to 285's they were not available. I love the 255's too and would be bummed if they are discontinued. I'm on my third set over the past 7-8 years.

Redrum is correct - I have been in contact with both my wholesaler and BFG directly and the 255 is just temporarily out of production and will be re-introduced with a new part number in a couple of months.

There is some speculation that it will come back as a load range E, rather than D.... let's hope not

From customer care at BFG: "The KM2 in size LT255/85R16 will be available May 1st and the part number is 04222."

So there you go.

In the event you're having problems finding tires in this size, check out this thread on ExPo - The 255/85R16 Tire Official List - Expedition Portal
