200tdi transmission splines worn badly?

Hi all,

I've been on a bit of a mission with my 200tdi to solve the awful whining noise that comes from beneath the centre seat. So far, I have drained the oil from the transfer case (happy to see there was some oil in there!) and taken off the plate on the side that seems to leak from every bolt! All looks ok, but I thought I would do the spline PTO test as there is a bit of a thud when I engage drive, see videos below. From what I've seen online this doesn't look so great Welcome some opinions!

The noise is present at speeds of 25mph+ and is speed dependant. If I coast in neutral the noise is still there.

Cheers!

Hard to tell front the video if the spline wear is bad or not. It won't cause any noise. So the running noise is something else.

Agreed...
More than likely the clunk you hear is in the rear diff.
200TDI is an engine, not a transmission or transfer case to get you in the "terms game" and help prevent you from sounding uninformed and ignorant of the correct terms.
Good luck and keep posting when ya need advice!

Thomas,

Some questions that may help spark some troubleshooting steps:

1. How many miles?
2. Truck new to you or just purchased?
3. Have you compared your noise to another '93 200Tdi?
4. 3 door or 5 door (carpet or no carpet)
5. Can you be more descriptive of the noise? Growl, whine, small beagles?
6. Last time wheel bearings have been serviced? Greased?
7. Transmission. Checked oil? If LT77, replaced oil ? What did filter look like?

Google "LT230 cross drilled input gear". Start reading. You'll see how to check your input splines and see if you have a cross drilled input gear or not. If not, a cross drilled input gear is easy to replace (call Ashcroft). If your splines are in good shape it helps to keep them that way.
