200tdi serpentine belt replacement

I've got an '85 Defender with a 200tdi in it and am starting to go through it with the intent of renewing everything necessary to make it reliable enough to be my daily driver. So, toward that end I'm wondering if anyone here is familiar with a gearing setup that replaces the belt drive for those things driven by the serpentine belt. Some years ago I read an article in Land Rover International about some shop in the UK that had a setup so that expeditionary vehicles wouldn't have a concern about the belt breaking. I can't remember enough about the article to remember if they did it to a 200 or a 300tdi.
Am I spitting in the wind pursuing that or what?
Brad

I have one 200 tdi with a serp belt. In was a cobbled together engine in a cobbled together truck. Seems like a lot of trouble and expense to get down to a single belt.

Doug,

I think he means the Zeus gear set. I've heard that you're better off sticking with the standard timing belt.

Has anybody here used the Zeus gears?

I really wanted to Zeus gears ti be the solution... but IMO they are not.
Search online and there are many horror stories, and some (but less as expected) good stories.

You can still buy them from Zeus, but for the price and potential warranty problems if they are defective it is better to just stick with the rubber band and change it religiously.

The belt is fine. They only break when installed wrong or left on too long.

All that happens when they break on a 200TDI are bent pushrods. Quick and easy to fix.

^^^^ Yup, carry a set of pushrods, maybe a couple of rockers (IIRC they're the same as the old 2.25 engine, pushrods certainly are anyway) and spare belt.

Timing gears

Thank you for the info. I looked up Zeus gears, as suggested, and was disappointed to read the problems encountered but relieved that I'm not the ones posting the results. You guys probably saved me from making an expensive mistake. I'll just replace the belt.
Thanks
