I have a spare 200 which I was going to send out to a specialist to get rebuilt, with a turner head that I got a while back.
My question is it worth it to ship to a Land Rover specialist, half way cross country or should I just find a local diesel guy to rebuild it? If there's a local LR who could do it, even better.
hardest part is line boring the cam bearings insitu. I have seen some finished bearings on ebay.uk so if a competent engine re-builder has plastiguage experience...they could prob get the job done. Crank seal is the only other remotely annoying part
i know this is anon answer but hopefully some insight.
I am a little weary of local diesel guys. My brother restored a 78 Bj40, and had a local diesel guy do the engine rebuild. The guy gave him a parts list that took a very long time to source. He rebuilt the engine and after 2500 miles had a catastrophic failure. $5k worth of rebuild is a 600lb paper weight.
I don't think you need a LR shop. Plenty of examples where guys have found solid machine shops that aren't spooked. The key, IMO, is to do the whole enchilada. Don't skimp and do **** half-ass. Have it torn down and rebuilt. A good shop will respect and appreciate the project. Remember these things aren't rockets, the shop might need a shop manual for specs and help sourcing parts, but that is what this site is for.
I havent used them personally but have heard good things. I am not sure if they will rebuild your own 200 but I dont see why not, maybe worth a call. I am originally from LI but live in CT now, figure a ferry ride and an hour north and you're there if you wanted to take it to a Rover guy...
I can't comment on how they would do on a Rover engine, but this place does nice work on a lot of really high horsepower 4 cylinder Japanese engines. This engine isn't very complicated so it might be worth a conversation. I used to send a lot of racing parts there for customers. These were customers from LI, Colorado, Jamaica (the country), all over really. They are in Amityville.
These guys have a good reputation, and I know they have seen a handful of LR diesels. Randy has used them with good results as well.
