200tdi heater hoses

Is there any reason you can't do away with the steel hose that leads from the water pump to the back of the engine (along the valve cover) and then feeds the cabin heater?
It seems like it makes sense with a rhd setup, but makes less sense with a LHD, WITH A new style heater.
Also, stupid ? Which one goes to the in arrow on the heater? The lead from the front of the engine, or the one that pops out of the back of the block?

I believe the back of the block is the feed, but im recalling from seeing it in a thread.

Yes, back of the head (not the block) is the supply to the heater. The one at the thermostat housing is the return. It connects to a port that goes to the bypass line.

Why do you want to lose the steel tubing? running that way follows along stock supports for the hoses. Running some other route would require making up custom supports.
