200tdi breather question

Why do some 200tdi's have a breather going from the valve cover to the case (hose #7 in pic) and some do not?
All the defender 200's I've seen have it and some disco don't...any reason? just curious.

Your crank case breather is just that. It allows for the the very small amount of combustion gases and heat expansion to escape into the atmosphere. It has a line from the breather to the crankcase so that the captured oil will return to the oil pan. On most TDI's I have seen(only about 10 or do) there is a line that runs from the breather over to the air inlet after the air filter but before the turbocharger. You must vent the case, it is not a closed system. Venting into the inlet might appear to be a closed system but it is not. I do not know if I have helped out with this explanation . I am sure that someone else step in to make it a little clearer.

I think you missed the point of the question. He is asking about item 7 that connects the cam gallery to the valve cover. The cam gallery is already open to the valve gallery through the lifters and push rods. I always assumed the hose was there to prevent high gas flow up the push rods in the event of large ring blowby. I did not know some Discos don't have it.

Looking through the parts catalog, it looks like it was deleted in later engines for both Discovery and Defender.

My 200tdi does not go to the case either.

It runs the output via tube to a tee on the intake.

I'm almost positive that's what mine does too. I'll have to look at it later.
