200 tdi no start/ crank

Went to start today and no crank. Starter sol clicks but wont turn engine. Checked battery- 12.6V; hooked up to wifes car- 14.2V and still same sound when I turn key and no crank. new starter needed? gonna try and pop clutch to get it running.

Did you have any starter issues last month when it first got really cold for a few days? Bang on it a bit and see if it loosens up. Or as you said pop it.

Could be a bad connection. The small amount of current for the solenoid would still be ok, but the voltage drop for the starter would prevent it from turning over.

I would check all of the connections before throwing money at it.

x2 on this. Make super certain the ground is good in particular. 200tdi starters aren't cheap, nor are they easy to swap out.

Yup- looks like bad connection on the bottom lug. Cleaned the contacts/ nuts in situ with emery, tightened everything up, and she started right up. Hardest part was dropping the down pipe. Thanks for the info.
