200 tdi exhaust gasket replacement advice

Hi all,

Just got my truck back after having the 200 tdi installed. Man, what a huge difference! Nice to keep up with traffic, even on the hills. Anyway, I've been using it daily for the last week and have noticed on startup a small puff of black/ gray smoke coming from the rear of the engine, behind the turbo; looks to be coming from the manifold. If i accelerate, i get small puffs of smoke in the engine bay. I get the "normal" quick black puff of smoke from the exhaust on start up. Truck runs relatively well. I'm looking to replace the manifold gasket, turbo to manifold gasket, and install an egt probe for a vdo gauge in the manifold. I have the workshop manual, and it looks pretty straightforward. Any tips or watch outs from anyone? Thanks in advance.

You find that the old locking nuts are backing off, get a set of prevailing torque lock nuts for the exhaust manifold, I always change them out when fitting new gaskets.

$.25 ea at boltdepot

GRADE C STOVER EQUIVALENT LOCK NUTS
Example of a grade C stover equivalent lock nut

A one piece all metal prevailing torque type hex lock nut with a conical top with chamfered corners. The resistance to loosening forces is created by distortion in the top threads. These are considered as one-way because they can only be installed one way – top up. Since they are all-metal, they are more resistant to higher temperatures and chemical exposure than non-metallic lock nuts (such as nylon insert lock nuts).

depending on which engine you have the leak is often the clamp on down pipe on the defender engine. Kind of a crappy design but makes it easy to remove so thats the trade off.

Thanks Doug. Yeah, I saw that too. The dp/ turbo connection is definately off a bit. I'll tackle that first.
