2.5 Petrol upgrade?

All:

If I buy a UK spec 90 with a 2.5 gas engine, can I just drop in a 4.0 or 4.6?

I was thinking I wanted a 200 or 300 Tdi in the Defender 90 SW that I plan to import in 5-6 years. But now I am considering a gas engine instead- mainly due to cabin noise. I know the 4.0 is not the most reliable engine in the world, so what other options are there? I would also like to hook an automatic transmission to it.

I did a search but couldn't find an answer.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul.

V8 frame mounts are different. 200tdi is direct bolt in replacement for the 2.5 petrol. Rover even offered a conversion kit @ one time.
Anything can be made to work- thats part of whats so cool about these trucks. An hour with a mig and yes you could bolt a 4.6 and r380 in if thats what floats your boat

Doug:

Thanks for the info.

Background on what I want the D90 for;

I'm thinking due to the nature of the driving a 4.0/4.6 mated to an auto tranny would be best?

Thanks,

Paul.
