2.5 Petrol Alternator/Fan Belt Help

Replacing my worn out alternator/fan belt on an 1987 Ninety with the 2.5 petrol engine. New belt (Dayco ETC7939) won't fit over all 3 pulleys with the alternator loosely bolted on. If I unbolt the alternator and then run the belt on all 3 pulleys, I can't get the alternator bolted down due to the holes not lining up close enough. I'd rather not have to take this to my mechanic to do this job. What am I doing wrong? Help!
