1997 Odometer Stuck

Hey guys,

When I bought my 1997 D90 from an authorized LR dealership, they had replaced the Odometer. When I reached 9,999 miles on the truck, the odo started flashing and hasn't been able to move up to ten thousand miles in the few weeks since. It displays intermittently, but will not move up. Thoughts on this before I take it to a shop? Saw Hans's fix but that is for the pre 97' trucks. Thanks.

Are you sure it is on "miles" and not "trip miles"?

On the "trip meter" the 97 odo will stop at 9999.9 and freak out.

Try pushing the little black button on the speedo face and holding it for a few seconds. It will reset the trip meter to 0.0 and then push the button again and you should go back to the regular odometer.

That or your odo is screwed up.

Thanks Mike, that ended up being the "issue." Trip counter was 9999.9, Odo was actually up to 11k+. Someday my rover will end up at ECR...

Mike,

I've got the Odo flicker on my truck. Any way I can send it over to you for a repair? Please say, yes.

Yes, but it is crazy money (not for me, but for the VDO stuff).
VDO found out what I was doing and jacked the display part I need by about 300% so I gave up doing the service for real, but if you really want it done I can do it.
Call Holly.

Mike;

Which part is it that they jacked the price up on, the LCD? I can't see that being proprietary, I wonder if you could potentially source it through somebody like Mouser or Digikey? Have any of the bad parts laying around, I could run it past some of the engineers at work and see what they can find.

Its the cable/display combo. and it is all made as a unit in an unserviceable plastic housing that is basically makes up the "face" of the speedo (minus the decal). I have looked high and low with no luck. It has to be assembled as a unit and the only place that has it is VDO. If I could get into that part and get the display out of it there might be another source, but you can't get to just the display unless you destroy the housing. Here is a picture of it.

Its a lot cheaper to just do another VDO speedo head, but the only reason I offer this is for those who want to keep the correctly date coded speedo in their truck. It helps with resale.

is there a way to get true mileage on a new VDO speedo? I don't intend to sell ever and the truck is at 95k so its not low mileage. I just want to keep the true mileage.

sneaky sneaky of them to do that kind of unserviceable assembly, and the assembly as a whole is undoubtedly proprietary. I see what you mean though how you can only do the whole assembly, not just components. I'm sure it's technically possible to do just a repair, but the time in labor to do it up to your standards (you know, professionally and well engineered), would still make it prohibitive to do.

It's just wall time - who cares! If you'd done it a year ago, it would be done by now

This may be a dumb question but isnt the ribbon the problem not the display? If so would the cable be easier to source or is it impossible to replace just the ribbon?

It can be both or a combo.

Being a mechanic and not a computer guy or electrical engineer I would have no idea where to source, or how to replace the ribbon.
I can solder things into a pc board and swap out parts, but that is where it ends with me.

Another alternative...

Hi,

Maybe a newbie response to this thread, but I had my speedo from a 1997 serviced by North Hollywood Speedometer, and they did an excellent job. I would highly recommend them for this service.

Maybe they have a source.
Somebody call them and see if they can fix the issue and keep the same housing.

If they can.. there is your answer boys.
