1997 NAS Speedo

The speedometer on my 1997 D90 just quit working yesterday. Luckily it came back o life about 5 min later. I have always had and intermittent odometer but the speedo has always worked. I think the odometer problem is a defective tape wire but I don't know much about the speedo. The odometer always keeps up with the mileage even when it's blank. If the speedo quits working does it stop keeping mileage? Not sure were to start but I don't want the mileage to be incorrect. I am going to keep her in the barn until I get this worked out. Any ideas? Thanks, Phil

I sent mine into North Hollywood Speedo several years ago and has been perfect since. It was 300 bucks or so (dont really remember).

Speedo not working is a different issue than odometer.

Thanks. I will check them out. Is the speedometer mechanical? (does it run on a cable or is it electrical?) If it's a cable I may climb under there and poke around.

The speedo problem may actually be an alternator issue. Mine go "wonky" when I don't have the head lights or fan on. Seems the "draw"on the alternator changes things. I know my alternator is the issue causing my speedo to act up.

For a couple months now mine 97 speedo surges from 0 to 120 and back to 0 whenever I start the engine. Odometer works fine and speedo works fine when moving. Just that first few seconds after start the needle surges to 120 and back. Weird.
