1997 D90 Automatic Speedometer

I've searched the post and found older model references...anyone have a link or part number for the 97 VDO Speedometer? The original is $700 from RN and that just seems to pricey. Thanks in advance. My searching ability seems to be lacking this morning on the VDO site.

Didn't look into that. Hey I'm an American, living in a consumer society. If it doesn't work throw it in the bin and buy another!

I recall ECR, or maybe it was just Mike, would repair them for us but I think they/he won't anymore. Point being they are repairable. FWIW, mine looked like it was about to give up the ghost for a long time. It would fade and blink and at one point totally went blank. I pulled mine out and ended up putting it right back in the same day and it slowly started coming back to life. That was 2-3 years ago. It works fine now but from time to time it will give a blink or two but it seems to always come back.

Yeah its been acting up and haven't pulled it. It could be a connection, I know it's loose because the whole gage walks when I'm driving any distance (about 1/4 inch).

I think ECR sent them off to a place in LA - can't remember the name of them, but it's in the threads here somewhere.

I thought maybe you had posted on this one before and that I missed something and didn't want to ask a stupid question.

From my file on the problem...

1. East Coast has a post about this on their site. They lost access to the cheap component required to fix the issue and I think they stopped the service. But they indicated that there was another source, North Hollywood Speedo. http://www.eastcoastrover.com/speedo.html

2. The images at this page suggest that the part number is 01 112 419. http://www.eastcoastrover.com/INFOD90.html

3. And recently another member had his repaired at North Hollywood See here...

North Hollywood does a great job had mine repaired a few months ago less than 1/2 the cost of a new and kept original miles

Bringing this back up. I just got back my speedo from North Hollywood Speedometer and couldn't be happier. The LED odometer in my NAS '97 had started dimming, they had it back to me in 2 weeks working perfectly for $250 or so. LED looks great and the mileage stayed accurate. I'd highly recommend them.

That's great to hear. Mine has started to blink sometimes. One day it'll spaz and the next be perfectly fine. Did yours do that as well by any chance?

It did, and the days it fell asleep and wouldn't wake up became more and more frequent, along with the random dimming when it was awake. I called them up, they knew the issue, had the part (a new screen) on the shelf and turned it around in 48 hours after receiving it. Money very well spent. Especially because it avoided the wierdness of getting a new odometer and having to justify a mileage discrepancy.

North Hollywood Speedo.

We tried a place in Ft. Lauderdale, but they changed all the guts of the unit and then the speedo acted like a VDO Vision unit (the needle sweeps when you turn the key on (and the factory unit does not do that)) and someone buying your car may pick up on that (I just did when doing a pre-purchase evaluation for a guy). So North Hollywood is the place. IMO.

I do not check PMs. Call or email if you need something.

ECR is not a parts source. We are not in the mail order business.

I have a '97 and my factory speedo ticks 3 times then sweeps too when starting, the LED thingie spaz's (love that term) sometimes AND the needle sometimes wanders but if I turn on an electrical draw, fan of parking lamps, it's OK. I've heard the wandering is from the Alt. so I have a spare on hand, but it's been the wandering thing for over 10 years.
