1997 D-90; Shifter Locks

Got stuck behind a trashtruck today on a narrow road so put the truck into park with the engine running to wait for him to clear out. When I went to shift back into Drive, I cudnt move the shifter. Guy behind me said my brake lights were out so we pulled every fuse in both fuse boxes only to find out that they were all fine. At this point 15 mins or so had gone by. Tried to shift into Drive again and it worked. Also looked and the brake lights were fine. I had my foot on the brake each time I tried to shift. We were on a flat road. Any ideas? Is there any emergency release of the shifter like some cars have? Thanks for your help.

Brake switch is going out. Located on the brake arm, just up from the pedal.

You should be able to do it. Unhook the connector, unclip old, clip in new, reconnect the wiring harness, done.

clip?

The brake light switch screws into the pedal box and has a small retainer nut. You have to make sure the install depth is right so that the lights come on at the right time (just look at how the old switch was and do the same). It isn't that easy of a job because they didn't leave much room to get it in and out. Very doable DIY, but it is a tight working area.
It would be the reason for the shift problem.
