1995 Defender 90 NAS Stereo Wiring???

I am having the harness time getting a straight answer from anyone (stereo installers, or the web) about the proper wiring for replacing the Land Rover head unit tape deck with a modern head unit which is amplified.

I have installed dozens of car stereos, but never encountered this much trouble figuring out the wiring / fuse situation. I bought a Metra harness from Crutchfield, and had to return it as it didn't work out, and was really for an older Discovery.

I finally found the amplifier under the drivers seat, and really I just want to bypass this.

Anyone had success in doing this?

Thank you!!

Jordan

Thanks guys, I do have that shop manual. What I mean is how to bypass the factor / oem amp under the passenger's seat. Has anyone done this successfully?

I know all/many 1997s came with the amplifiers but not so with earlier models. i'm unsure of the issues you're facing here. There are plug adaptors from Alpine and others, and as long as you know your wire coloring you should be all good, especially if the amp was factory installed. Posting pics always helps.

The stock stereo wiring harness has a loop that goes into the passenger seatbox and comes back into the center console. I removed the center panel and stripped the harness back and removed all of the wiring to the stock amp. I was able to fit the KTP-445 amp in my tuffy console and simplify the wiring underneath the car. Haven't gotten around to taking the old amp out yet...

Great size amp! How does it sound and what type of speakers are you using?

I have JBL GX602 speakers which come with adapter rings that some crazy how line up with the 3 stock speaker screw holes. I drilled a couple more just to try to anchor them a little better. The alpine head unit volumes goes up to 30 and I rarely turn it above 15. The KTP-445A plugs right into any Alpine unit, the 445U stands for universal. I also got the SWE-1200 subwoofer - because I just love blowing money - and the sound is really full and good now. Too bad I can't hear it over the wind noise. Jk. kinda...
