1994 D90 Ignition and computer

I just bought by dream 1994 D90 #1008, and I'm trying to sort out some electrical gremlins. It was stolen, hot wired, banged on with a sledge hammer, and had the computer stolen. The previous owner for two months did some hodge podge work to get it running again, installing a 4.2L Range Rover computer, currently just banging around loose behind the AC, and doing some sketchy twist-together wiring work. When I dug into it today to find out why the headlights didn't work- found that the always hot headlight wire (brown I think) was twisted together to the remains of the white/black top wire of the ignition switch, powering it.

I can't find the original other end of the white/black ignition wire to put it back right, where does it come from? I couldn't find it coming off of the computer, the solenoid, or in the cut up remains of my harness under the dash.

Also, are there any issues to running the 4.2L Range Rover computer on the stock motor? There must be 20 wires throughout the harness intentionally cut, is there any chance these were cut by the amateur electrician to make it run?

There's a black plastic box under the dash about 2 inches by 4 inches with what looks like a speaker in the front, with a bunch of little wires cut, anybody have any idea what it is? Hanging by the floor in the 2nd photo.

Can't wait to pay it forward as I become more familiar with the Landie and excited to be part of the forum!

Stuart,

Welcome to the pleasures of Defender ownership. The little black box that looks like a speaker is the audible warning (seat belts, lights left on, key left in ignition)unit. There should be eight wires coming out of it, shouldn't affect running of the truck.

I carry a RR 4.0 ECU as a spare in my Def 110. When I got the spare, I tried it out and the truck ran fine. I understand any 14CUX computer will work, what changes between engines is the mapping and in the case of Defenders, they have a speed limiter at around 85 mph that shuts down the fuel injection. When I plugged a RR computer into my D90, I never got to the speed limiter.

BY the way, my 93 D110 has its dash out for some bulkhead repairs. For most systems/wiring the NAS 110 and the 94 D90 should be the same or close enough. So, if you need some short term assistance on tracing wires PM me.

Scott

Also, just checked the 110 and the service manual. There should be four wires attached to the ignition switch -- Brown, White, White/Orange, White/Red. I would guess your white/black is some mod.

Do a google search on D90 wiring diagrams and you should find everything you need to debug the electrical system of your D90. That's what I have been doing with a situation not too unlike yours. Look at 300TDI wiring diagrams that are available here, it seems pretty close to my 1994 D90 http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=15999
