1988 Land Rover Santana 2500 wheel question

Good evening and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

I own a 1988 Land Rover Santana 2500.

For those of you not familiar with them, here is my personal explanation:

All of this comes from buying parts for it and looking at photos comparing and contrasting. I have not yet been unable to buy new parts but it has been a guessing game between Defender and Series 3.

It is essentially a combination of Series 3 and D90 parts assembled in Spain.

The front end is D90 style with different indicators (Hella sourced) and different headlight trim. The rest from what I can tell is all Defender, including the front doors. The interior / dash is also defender style.

It has a galvanized frame with leaf springs, but they are parabolic unlike the Series 3 that came with standard leafs.

The drivetrain appears to be Series 3 with the 2.5NA but paired from the factory with an LT85 and CDL High / Low transfer case. (It is woefully underpowered for the gearing of the LT85 and transfer case.)

The tub is Series 3. There are some other differences, primarily the hella sourced electrical systems and parts.

Everything I represent above is only applicable to the 1988 Santana 2500. I have seen photos of the 87 and earlier models and 89 and later. There are differences compared to the 1988 model with those differences becoming more dramatic with each year later.

My current question involves the wheels. I was hopeful to install some alloys from a 90s era discovery but those Series 3 style axles / hubs do not look like they will allow that.

Can anyone shed some light on this question?

Thanks, looking through their website I have already figured some things out. It is a superior website.

I am not near the truck at the moment but will look through my email for some photos.

funny you should mention santanas, I just finished a 12j to 300 tdi conversion on an 88 santana 110, not the easiest but doable.
the owner purchased this unit with nato style steel wheels and replaced them with a set of 5 spoke Zu alloy wheels no spacer at all straight fit. he purchased the wheels from paddock uk.

Thanks for all the great replies. Stock wheels are 16 inch steel. Maybe I should just keep them. Tires on them now are 245 - 75 - 16.

On the 300TDi swap, I sent a bunch of photos of the engine compartment to Duncan Goodchild (Landrover import) and he said a 200TDi would go right in with little trouble and the 300TDi would just be a bit more work. I prefer to not weld in new mounts (did that on my Disco) so in time I will go with the 200TDi.

He had nice things to say about the LT85 and suggested keeping it.

little bit of work and thinking, there is a kit sold in the uk, where you use existing chasis location and a couple of brackets to move engine mounts from center location on 300 to front location on chasis.
this makes the 300 sit right against the firewall. it includes exhaust down pipe and a few other tid bits...some holes on the engine bell housing need to be relocated all instructions included..really easy but time consuming.
nothing to weld all is bolt on mod.

Zach at Rover's North

Just thought I'd give you an update after exchanging email with Zack. Surprisingly, he was able to offer some insight. However, I am beginning to think I might be the "expert" on Santana models. Zack sends his regards...

You gotta admit it is pretty damn funny... coming from the schmuck that failed to pick up on all the obvious digs. Love the coffee mug! Where can I get one... ?

------ Follow up post added August 23rd, 2016 08:14 PM ------

Also, how can we Santana people get our own technical discussion section? I'm sure there are at least 3 of us...
