1984... the magic year?

ok, so i've seen a lot of guys talk about their imported defenders... it seems like every one of them is an '84. *mine* is an '84 (probably). however, the data plate in my engine bay has a vin number and nothing else. do you other '84 guys have more info on your data plates?

what's the deal with these things??

motor heritage museum... interesting place, just perused the website. good resource if i ever have to legally prove anything about my defender, but... not free. haha

i happen to have the front bumper off now for painting, i'll peek around for date stamps on the front horns. easiest date stamps to get at on parts?

On my 86, the dealer in Bahrain sent the vin to Land Rover in the UK. A couple of weeks later I got a letter from Land Rover with the date she was born. When I get back from New Hampshire I will to find out more info.

Matt, the vin number is stamped on the right front horn of the frame and this is the most telling. You can look up details from the VIN here

http://www.clifton.nl/index.html?calvin.html

This one shows where to find the VIN, but at least for my NAS it didn't decode it correctly. I know calvin works well

The magic with 1984 is that it was the first year you could import into the US so that's what you'll see the most, although you can now import a 1986 or older (the rule is 25 years old or older).

that explains it. actually, now that i think of it, 25 years ago was only '86, so this makes sense. great links, btw. thanks much
