Exclamation 1984 defender 90

Hi, i have just brought a 1984 defender 90 with a transplanted 300tdi engine and gearbox,
its been running really well however when i lifted the bonnet i noticed that there is no cooling fan or cowl from the radiator, the engine does not seem to be overheating and only reaches half way on the temp gauge, Is this normal and do i need to fit a viscous fan and assembly ????

Not converted very well then!

I'm assuming that's Shropshire UK? in which case, you're not going to have the heat like say, Nevada, so the fan probably won't be missed, but I'd be inclined to fit one and get the cowling as well. it's how the vehicle was designed, so would work to its optimum performance that way.

I have the fan/cowl removed on my 2.5 NA -- but I'm not sure why you would want to on a 300 tdi. I'd find the parts and install them, or go with an electric fan setup.

Most of the 300's temp gauges run some place from the middle to just shy of the middle of the gauge. I would however check the temp at the radiator with a IR gun or something just to make sure your gauge is working correctly. If you are running the R380 as mentioned above it should be easy to find the cowling or make one up. You should actually run a little better with one as the air will be forced to flow past the inner cooler a little better.

In Shropshire probably not. Seems to be a common short cut your side of the pond. Half the tdi trucks I have imported had no shrouds or fans
