Jeez no wonder the lawib was running like shyat. Figured as long as everything was halfway apart, I'd see if my suspicion was correct that I have had the timing fouled up for a long time. How it ever ran at all is a marvel but the fact that I had the diz cranked around must have been enough for it to catch fire. Sometimes I'd just crank away and it wouldn't go and after 20 tries it would finally run.
In addition the oil was all sooty and the plugs black.
Should be all fine and dandy now and maybe even get some better mileage.
Just goes to show you that sometimes, no matter how careful and methodical you are about setting initial static timing, you can blow it.
