Pulls very well. 1st is slightly overgeared, but nothing bad. If it stick my 255's on, then 1st does become pretty useless for steep hill starts, but it takes all of 2 seconds to slip into low range, pull away in 2nd low, then shift straight into 2nd high. easy.
When I towed my new G wagen back last month (SWB 280GE is anyone's interested... my next project!) I had to use low a couple of times on hillstarts even on 235's, but once I was moving it was no problem.
Mind you.... even a SWB G comes in at about 2300KG!!!
I've got the same problem, running a tweaked Td5 90 with a 1.2 on 35's. 1st sometimes is a little overgeared, like stopped on a hill with the A/C on. After 1st, there's no problem whatsoever. MPG on the highway is awesome, and I'd hate to lose that by going to 4.11's or a 1.4 box. If I could put in a taller 1st gear in that would be perfect.
