VIN question

Been googling this but can't get the terms right, so thought someone here for sure would know the answer or can point me in the right direction.
Have my attention on a '94 D90 with a VIN that begins with SALDV . . .. I did a basic search and got advice that it is smog legal for 49 states except the one I live in, CA. How can I make sure this is accurate? And yes, I've tried to get through to CA's DMV. Waste of time it appears. Any help will be deeply appreciated.

I think plenty of people have 93's and 94's in CA.

You don't have a VIN question at all ... you have a question about the legality of a 94 Land Rover defender in the state of CA.

use this

http://www.bar.ca.gov/pubwebquery/ve...pubtstqry.aspx

or google "ca dmv smog history" and get the ca.gov site

94's are not a problem. Just reg'd mine but it was a CA car.

As long as its NAS, you shouldn't have any trouble registering it in any state including Ca. SALDV only tells you the country of origin (England), Manufacturer (LR), Model (Defender) and Series which NICB lists as Range Rover 100" wheel base. The other numbers/letters denote the body style, engine, transmission, year, assembly plant and sequence number with a check digit thrown into the mix.

If its salvaged or from out of state you'll probably have to get the VIN inspected, but that's a simple process.

Having just gone through it, shoot across any question. I'm sort of muddling my way through the ownership process and learning... the really hard way. Good luck!

dont apologize .... you are free to post ... please ask questions ... buy a defender and become part of the elite! ;-)

Just so you know ... 99% of parts are obtainable apart from the roll cage and padding on a ST ( soft top ).

Fixing them is within the capability of a competent DIYer.

oh and post pictures when you get a truck ... everyone love a good land rover pic!
