Pinion Seal Question

Need to replace the seal, but is there too much play in this to ignore? Or is this just normal driveline slack? It seems to have a tiny bit of lateral movement, no longitudinal movement, but some rotational slack that can be heard.

Rotational slack is normal, it is just the backlash in all the gears and splines combined.

Assuming the nut is tight, there should be no bearing play. It is meant to have preload on the bearings.

Yeah, that doesnt look too bad...

Not the leaky seal, that is terrible...but your amount of play is ok.

Looks okay. That is an very small amount of rotational play. You have a tight driveline.

Have a look at the flange when you do the seal. If it is grooved at the seal surface, it will probably leak again.

I have FINALLY had a chance to get under the truck and get this seal worked on. I had to take it to a shop to get the nut released after trying every trick I could think of.

But now I can't get the seal out. I'm carefully using a screwdriver to try to pry it out, but it is not budging in the least.

Any pointers?

You can snip away at it with some wire cutters but be careful not to mar the metal sides.

Big screwdriver or pry bar and push hard. No need to be gentle.

Well... I'm certainly not being gentle. Just trying not to ruin anything else.

If it is not out you are being too gentle. The seal has a metal outer so it is quite hard to hurt anything.

I think I'm going to have to pull the flange apart at those six bolts and use a vice and a hammer to pound it out from the inside direction. This just isn't working.
