How to tell you have an ex-mod

I know I've learned quite a bit about rovers, but I'm no super expert. I was wondering if there were any telltale ways to know if a particular rover is ex MOD. Was there any technical differences? Or do you have to go through the vin to find out?
Just a curiosity thing.
Thanks,
-Mike

I thought this was going to be another thread from spammer before I opened it.

Tons of ways to tell. If you have an example of one you're confused on, post the pics here and we'll walk you through the ways to determine ex-mod.

Sometimes there's little signs that tell the tale like light size in the rear. The anti roll protection behind the front seats may have gun mount holes where things were mounted or brackets. Some mat have a small light on the diff. That light allows the truck to be seen from behind when in a convoy. No light surrounds around the head lights. I strongly feel that my truck is an ex-mod.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the answers guys,
The one we have now is in England atm. I'm pretty sure it's not a MOD truck, although I'll post some pics anyway. but I was more so interested for "future purchasing endeavors".

@Uncle Douglas
I figured there might be a way through the vin and serial number. do you know of the resources to check that?

Ps, I'll double check my wording when making a title next time :P

Edit: it will only let me upload one at a time

Hi Dave.

You may find something like this behind a seat which will also give you a hint.

If it hasn't been removed it'll have a 6-way light switch on the dash.
Also don't think they had door locks. But they can be added.
Front axles are reinforced.
Rear cross member ends are square rather than tapered.

Trouble is, especially series rigs which are 30 odd years old at their youngest age, lots of bits could have been swapped out, so it would be hard to tell (unless it's in original condition.... that picture of the blue S3 above, looks like any farmers truck, yet could have been converted from a mil vehicle)

Things to look for that the military ones had:
screw on light lenses
as mentioned, square ends on the rear crossmember, but these were only on the 109" HD chassis (along with an unboltable gearbox crossmember), and extended spring shackles, as per the export spec vehicles, again only on the 109" HD chassis.
the 6 way light switch, although a lot of people ditch these when they go wrong.
light on the rear diff/axle
welded on bracing on the front (and in the case of a lightweight 88", ) rear casing
the lightweight (aka Air portable) early ones also had "flat" drive hubs; no metal cap on the end of the halfshaft. later ones reverted to the same as civvy models.
rifle mount brackets inside, or hole where they were from.
IF it was a FFR, then 24v electrics/twin batteries between the front seats, large 90a generator on the engine.
Oil cooler fitted to the engine (FFRs), along with screened & waterproof ignition system.
engine painted duck egg blue
the full military spec 109"..GS or FFR (not the CL, which was just a civvy spec model painted green) had twin underseat tanks instead of the one rear tank)

that's a few things to start with.

Good point on modifications. Anything could have been removed from or added to a civvy or MOD. Though I can't imagine anyone adding a 6-way switch to a civvy.
I thought 88's also had a square rear cross member, but I haven't looked at one in many years. But I know lightweights had them and removable gearbox crossmember. My lightweight also has an oil cooler but wasn't FFR.

Are you saying that you were firing a gun into the air?

This is why I ask...

Nice try. However, 3-5 miles in the direction that we're facing is the Atlantic Ocean. I could have hit a fish.

Good thing there are never any boats or ships off the coast of NY.

I'm a gun guy, and all for a little fun... but firing into the air is, how do I say it?

Dumb.

If nothing else its a waste of good ammo.

I was just joking guys. I'm to old to be shooting guns into the air. I did that, done that and won't be doing that anymore. Those days are far gone. I think I've seen as much action as any service men at war. Those days are far behind me. I'm more like Lot. I keep moving forward. If my wife or friends want to look back and turn to a pilar of salt, it's on them. My passion now is Land Rovers.

I wasn't implying that you shot the kid, obviously. I'm just pointing out that its not a good idea to fire a weapon into the air.
