I've got a serious leak on the RH side of the rear axle of my 67 Series IIa (brake shoes are coated). How big of a job is it to replace the seal and what parts do I need? I can't tell on Paddock Spares what parts to order. Plenty of rusted hardware so I'm a little nervous. Thanks
This is pretty basic repair. I was just teaching my 16 old son recently this exact process and we did the full job of replacing the bearings on the new defender I'm building. Series is almost exactly the same
You need: new
inner and outer seal, small cotton washer, cotter pin, locking washer
tool you need:
socket set
screw driver to pry out the seal
tools, hub nut tool is a plus but you can do it w/o it.
bearing grease, tool to grease the bearing is nice but not necessary.
few cans of brake cleaner.
rubber gloves( getting old and like clean hands) not necessary
You may want to replace the springs on the brakes. Also look at the spindle for wear. The race is can be replaced w/o replacing the spindle. Also check wheel cylinder for leaks.
Call Les or Zack at Rovers North. They can get you the parts and walk you through he process. You can also email me or call off list roverxtdi@gmail.com 615 681 8441
Cheers,
Scott
