We got some of these in Canada. Very cool little units that turned to rust powder instantaneously.

They actually pitched a few established other make dealers in the US on taking these as an additional franchise. From what I understand, a few dealers signed up but an import agreement was never reached.

What bothers me is that it's being advertised as a Land Rover Defender

ARO 4x4

I owned an SUV 5 door version of this truck back in about 1995. They were imported from Romania by a company called American Muscel, located in Biddeford, Maine. The dealer who sold them in the New York metro area was S.M. Rose, once the largest Chevy dealer in the nation. They sold for $9,995. They were big, slightly smaller than a range rover. They featured a primitive enamel paint job. The interior had rubber floor coverings which could be removed and seats were held in with wing nuts which could also be removed. You could hose out the entire interior. They came with a ford 2.5 four cylinder engine (same as base ford ranger). They also had a ford 5 speed tranny. The brakes were enormous Romanian military drum brakes all around and were horrible. The name of the model was the ARO Hunter 244. The company used surplus 244 badging from an older Puegot 244. It had manual locking hubs, leaf springs, recirculating ball steering. The electrical system was Romanian and was a fire waiting to happen (ask me how I know). It had very high ground clearance and heavy axles and could drive over anything. The steel was crude and I was chasing rust from about two months after I bought it. It was impossible to keep running. I think I was able to keep it running about a year until the dealership bought it back because it was a lemon. It was an adventure.

Saw one these at a car dealership in Carson City NV new back in the late 90's. Unreal poor construction and noisy. Could not believe the met federal NHSA rules for a legal import
