What are the chances he's actually moving overseas?

What do you guys think the chances are that this dude is actually moving overseas? Or do you think he's just coming up with an excuse to list the truck for sale for double what he paid for it a few weeks back? This truck has been super molested it's not even funny. $20k is probably all it's actually worth.

Original Listing when he bought it. Winning Bid: $20,701.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...t_25108wt_1194

Then listed last week for $40k BIN. Not even using his own images.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123

Now listed again today at $35k BIN after not a single bid at $33k opening the last time.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...TQ:MOTORS:1123

Listing Text. VIN SALDV2242VA118883 Badge 1900 from 1997 AA Yellow
It breaks my heart to sell this vehicle because it has been my dream car. I am getting posted overseas with my new job, and I just cannot bring it with me. This Defender gets so many looks. Every time I drive around the city people give me thumbs up and people often tell me how cool my Defender is. It is truly an awesome 4x4! Very few vehicles on the road retain their value or increase in time, but Land Rover Defenders do! I am selling it as is! If you have a question please email me. I am currently overseas, but I will be stateside in a week. I will do my best to answer any email questions in the interim. I will do local pick-up or you can arrange for a delivery company to pick it up (I could help with this process) at your cost. The title is clear, and I have a brand new set of black side steps (that are not installed -I just paid $450 for them but because of my traveling I have not had the time to install them. I also just bought a brand new Land Rover Defender rear tire cover). The tires are practically new, and look great. The engine does not leak oil, and it runs great! Automatic transmission.

That truck looks rough... And what is with the center console? It looks like a 15K truck.

Yeah for sure. The ONLY things it has going for it are 1997, clean title, and 88k miles. If I was selling it, that's all I'd list in the description, and only these 5 photos.
Some unsuspecting buyer would probably pay me $30-35k for it and be very disappointed once it showed up in the driveway.

Who knows... I'm one of the lazy ones that will use the PO pictures too.

I agree $20k close to what's worth.

it's slow at work so I emailed him why his photos had north shore autosport on them and if he really owned the car

his response

Thank you for your email. I am not a car dealer. The pictures are up to date pictures of how the vehicle looks. They were taken by north shore auto sport. I'm using these pictures because they are of good quality and show honest and true specifics of the vehicle. I am the owner of the vehicle. I would be interested if you have a reasonable/fair offer. When I registered the vehicle in DC just two months ago the Bluebook value was between $32k-$42k (that is the tax rate at which I paid when I transferred the title to Washington DC. Thank you.

- soldatu11

I sold my 90 that was clean over a year ago with a trailer for 25 - someone needs to click the correct condition box on kelly blue book as those prices are way out of line

That thing actually looks better in the pics than it does in person. I stopped out and looked at it for a forum member. It was in horrid condition. I would think closer to 15k would be reasonable, from prices I've seen on here.

He's looking to make a quick buck and no item is exempt from this. Caveat emptor.

Duh. Some "new" side steps and a rear tire COVER (not carrier) - neither of which have been installed because he's overseas at his new very important job posting that requires him to sell off all of his stateside assets at twice what he paid for them before he can leave the country.

thumbs

Brian,
You need to drive around with a super hot model next to you!!!! Then you will get the thumbs up.

Seriously you don't get any thumbs up? I saw a guy in the turn lane across from me the other day and he took a shot of the truck with his iPhone.

The new tire cover alone must be, oh, five grand? Those damn things don't come cheap if you want that OEM look.

I asked him why the price increase:

Yes, as you can see the link you sent me this is the same vehicle that I am selling. It is not some revammped wreck, and came from a credible dealer. The vehicle actually sold at $25k which is what I paid for it. This price was obvisouly under Kellyblue book value, as this car is valued in the high $30's. Who says I needed to make improvements to increase the selling? If I bought this vehicle for 10K it doesn't me I have to sell it for the same amount. It is fine as it is, and if I wanted to sell it for a million dollars I could. I am certain no one would buy it, but if someone would disagree with my selling price then they do not have to bid. After paying $3k in taxes on it, and the side steps I purchase I am at $27.5-28K. The vehicle works great, and the issues it has are cosmetic. Now that I have to get rid of it, if I can make a couple of grand I will feel better about parting with it. Now I have answered EVERY single one of your questions with integrity and honesty. I hope that final question answers all of your questions.

Best,

Alan

I call BS on the $25k part - how do you win an eBay auction at $20.7k and somehow end up paying $5k more? If that was the case and I was leaving feedback for the seller (who this dude bought it from) then I would certainly not be praising them the way that he does in his Feedback to them.

Feedback

Thank you for my Defender 90! Good deal and good seller.

Most people think its a jeep.

Seriously, I hope some unsuspecting sap doesn't buy this thing. You can find a better 90 for better money. Does it even have a full cage? Not to mention he's missing the auto console.

Any intelligent buyer should at least Google the VIN number and if they do, this is the first result for that search, so at least the buyer can get an honest opinion on the truck from fellow owners.

That rust is definitely not "cosmetic" haha!

It's only a fastback so no rear cage, and it probably only has that bikini top and not a true fastback top and definitely doesn't have the Badger half cab top. Also no A/C, no 1997-specific center console, can't tell if there's a radio, no rear bench or brackets, etc. It also barely has doors...

Horrid. Needs thousands to fix up. Missing hi brake light too. Thats probably the start of the money drain.

In Virginia it's required to be there if it was fitted at the factory. Granted, the overwhelming majority of state inspectors wouldn't have the foggiest idea that it was missing from the truck.
