Selling my grandfathers 1972 Mercedes

Hello all. My grandfather recently passed away and I have been commissioned by my dad to sell his prized diesel Mercedes. He was the original and only owner and was a diesel mechanic by trade. 44,789 miles. Car is located at my grandfathers house in Ft. Collins, Colorado. My dad wanted me to start with a $12k asking price, but I know he is open to offers.

Check out the dropbox link below for a bunch of photos. Here is the ad I just drew up:

1972 Mercedes Benz 220D - Diesel Sedan

- One owner
- Purchased new by my grandfather on September 29, 1971
- 44,789 original miles
- Have original sales receipt for $7,150.50 in 1971
- Original owners manual and paperwork
- Manual transmission
- No rust
- Always garaged and covered
- Leather interior in perfect condition

This was my grandfathers prized Mercedes. He was a diesel mechanic by trade and kept this classic diesel in perfect working order. It is in showroom condition, as original as original can get.

To see a full gallery of high quality images of the Mercedes have a look here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lqae5tvmgbjfn7a/CM3pvCQPIZ

My first car was a 71 220d. It had well over 500k miles when I retired it...I love these cars and this one looks beautiful.

Good luck with the sale.

Thanks so much Steve. It is a beautiful car.

-- ALSO I just realized the title to my post says "1971" ... it is actually a 1972. I was confused as he bought it in Sept. of 1971, but the model year is 1972.

Sorry for the mix up in the title.

AND so as not to get confused with this and that other "all original, rust free, one owner" vehicle that everyone knows and loves, I am an open book. Any questions, comments, request for images ... I am all in. I may have to ask my dad and get back to you, but I'm an open book.

Is it really leather or MBtex vinyl. If it is really leather that is AMAZING condition (not that I doubt it based on the rest of the car).

That's just beautiful. I have no business asking, but I'll ask anyway - how does she run/ride?

Great question. I am in California, the car is with my folks in Colorado ... SO I called my dad. He said the seats are leather. I said "Well, will you go take a look and double check." He texted me back "Looking behind the rear seat arm rest, looks like vinyl. I thought Papa said however the seats were leather. Maybe not." -- there you go. Great catch. Must be vinyl. A damn good replication though. Had us fooled. I honestly havent ridden in the car since I was about 12 years old. My grandpa started it up every week or so and drove it to get the mail.

As I recall the ride was soft and slow, but it's been awhile. My grandpa was a diesel mechanic so he kept it running like a top though.

Here is my grandpa and his crazy work bench. And another photo of him working with my dad on their 1947 Willy's CJ2a.

A great man. Always took great care of his cars.

We could keep it in the family, and just may ... but my grandpa was a bit of a car guy and in addition to this Mercedes he left my dad with a 1981 Porsche 911sc, a 1947 Willy's CJ2a, and a 1997 Mercedes m350 ... my dad doesn't know how to get them all under one roof before the Colorado winter kicks in. (I submitted my request for the 911sc

Before my grandfather died he sold off his collection - I still wish both could somehow be around. This 220D appears to be in amazing shape and you should have no issues selling it if you don't decide to keep it. Best of luck!

Manual trans in that is pretty rare...I had the kick for a 2-door 280SE after The Hangover came out but I couldn't find one that was manual.

I'm sorry for your loss. My late grandfather also had a 70s Mercedes (I think it was a 300SE) and kept his cars in similar condition. It's refreshing to see such pride of ownership! If it ends up with you in SoCal, perhaps it might be something the MB Classic Center might like to help sell? I know it's not a really valuable model compared to the 70s SLs, 6.9s and such, but you never know.

Yeah I do know he special ordered it from Mercedes with the 4 speed manuel. He told me a story once that the first one he special ordered was delivered with a small dent on the fender so he had it sent back and later received this one.

Thanks so much Brady. I appreciate your words. My brothers name is Brady & my wife is from Dallas. Went to Lake Highlands HS. Thanks for the heads up on Mercedes Benz Classic. I've never seen that place.

44,000 miles? The engine isn't even broken in.
Personally I'd have no second thoughts about keeping it.
