I'm sure that isn't for lack of trying.

They have certainly confiscated every Skyline they can find.

First they came for the pumas then they came for the Jews.

Sorry I was thinking of something else.

Some advice, if you're worried about the gov't seizing these trucks, you guys should probably stop importing these late model ones and re-VINing them as NAS 110s or early 80 somethings.

I had a Defender in the shop recently that looked to be brand new spec. It had Canadian plates and the owner said he was moving here and looking for someone to work on his rig. I looked at VIN# for the estimate write up......fawkin '92 Range Rover......
told him to leave and not come back. Have no need of that shite.
I find it disturbing that people are committing themselves to a felony to drive a piece of glorified farm equipment.

Then there is the "it came in under diplomatic plate" story........

It's not the importer or seller that is going to be out of pocket if a truck is siezed ... Knowing the vin of the donor vehicle is important to ensure it came from a reputable source. While re-aging a vehicle is possible due to the rules in the UK and US, driving round in something made up of stolen parts is illegal in both places. Given the massive margin and high prices paid for these puma imports, I'm sure it's an attractive and relatively low risk market for the criminal fraternity. Not saying it has happened yet, but it's likely.

Speaking as someone who builds these vehicles, we buy our own donor cars (we have 4 at present), and we buy the Donor late model cars directly from Land Rover. The new chassis which is left over is sold on, with the vin plates.

I read something in Land Rover International that most trucks going to the USA are stolen and revinned. I have no clue where they got that from. Most people who want these trucks go through very specific places that have been in business for a very long time. Donor trucks that are used for parts are bought from Land Rover and typically are new or almost new. They are than stripped of parts. I will not debate whether or not using a new truck for parts is wrong.

Now these trucks that pop up randomly from Mexico or this one listed here I have no idea about. They have sketchy titles so who knows the story.

As these increase in popularity and awareness increases people will end up buying from random eBay sellers without the reputation that the current suppliers have established. I feel that the function of a community like D90 should help educate people to the potential pitfalls of Defender ownership ... Traceability of a donor vehicle is especially important given that the process of restoration of the old vehicle conceals the identity of the donor vehicle.

I agree with you. The buyer should know exactly what they are building/getting.

Seems we've had a conversation about sketchy eBay dealers recently. Maybe Josh can find that thread....
