Possible scam on D90 #3016 in NC?

Hey guys,

In my continued, but casual, search for a Defender, I came across the one pictured below... he's asking, ahem, $5500 ("including shipping costs"). The guy says he's in the military and only has time to sell it through a 3rd party escrow and that it has to be shipped, not picked up. Uh huh, yeah right. I emailed him and said I'm near by and wanted to some look at it... not surprisingly, I've not heard back yet. Everything about it seems fishy to me. I thought I'd A) give you guys a heads up and B) see if any of you have heard of a similar scam or even seen this D90 before. Any info?

I looked at this link but all it confirms is that #3016 is Alpine White:
http://www.lrfaq.org/Defender/D90ST.db.3001.html

Here are the pics he sent me:
http://s1180.photobucket.com/albums/x416/DEFENDER-90/

He actually just wrote me back while I was typing the above text and said:
"The transaction will be closed only through eBay Motors and this way we will both be protected. My current job doesn't allow me to do otherwise. I have way to little free time to handle home visits and my phone calls are very limited. As I said before the car is as described and you will be able to inspect he car before a final decision."

You think he'd try to make the scam SOMEWHAT believable... I mean, $5500 bucks? C'mon.

That's another red flag... it's not even for sale on ebay, but he's trying to use ebay checkout! HA! If he does try to send some kind of ebay link, I'll report it for sure.

LR scam

Yea, I've been stringing him along notified Autotrader and Ebay. A couple of years ago I got sent two bogus US postal money orders for $750 each which I turned over to the Feds. Usually foreign and their English is bad and they have no idea what they are doing anyway. This is the D90 scammer and the scam below:

David Sitherwood <davidsitherwood@att.net>

Let me explain you how the ebay process works.

The process works something like this:
You send the deposit ($2,500) to an ebay representative, then ebay will confirm me that you have made the payment. I will ship you the car so you can inspected. If you will not get exactly the same car that you have viewed in the ad, and also a clean title you will receive all your money back from ebay. If everything is ok ebay will get the approval from you to release me the founds. If you agree with this process please let me know and I will forward your details to ebay.

Hello,

1995 Land Rover Defender with 82,258 miles is located in ELON, NC and is still available. Run great. It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I have the pictures hosted on the net and you can see them at: http://s1180.photobucket.com/albums/x416/DEFENDER-90/ The price I'm asking is $5,500 including shipping costs. There are no other costs regarding this transaction. The transaction will be closed only through a 3rd party and this way we will both be protected. My time is limited due to my job in the army so I decided to use a service from eBay Motors. To begin the transaction I just need your consent and a clear decision if you want to buy this or not and then I will be able to get this started. After that you will receive a self explanatory invoice from eBay Motors that will tell you all the details you need to know about our transaction and also will give you the choice to proceed or not with the deal so basically you can decide then if you want to buy or not my car by simply answering to them. The car will be shipped insured to your location with DAS and you will have 5 days for inspection.

thank you,
David Sitherwood

As you have a name, Mr David Sitherwood, and a statement from him he is in the Army (I presume US of A), can you notify the armed forces? How many Sitherwoods in the army from Elon can there be? If bustin his chops, having an MP knock on his door to arrest him for potentially impersonating a service member - should scare a pound or two out of him. That would be nice.

There is pretty much a 0% chance that the dude's name is actually David Sitherwood, or that he actually lives in Elon, NC...or the US of A for that matter!

x2

His English in the emails is fairly poor (though I've known enough Americans that aren't any better!) and he doesn't answer his phone... just goes to some answering service.

Reported to ebay and autotrader nonetheless.

That ain't happening. The US military has more important things to deal with and MPs can't arrest US citizens, unless you are watching the A-Team.

I beleive the FBI would investigate this, and not an MP. THis ad is all bullshit though, so you will get nowhere. Never send money to someone you dont know for a vehicle, especially if you only speak to them on the phone.

I really doubt he is in the military, and it really pisses me off that the douche bag is using that as "cover".

Y'all have probably already heard of this, but these guys have some good ideas on how to string along scammers. Look at the trophy room, they basically get these scammers to do outlandish stuff and waste their time. One example is a scammer who was scammed into recording a novel for a "book on tape company" three times.

http://www.419eater.com/index.php

And MPs are too busy on cell phone patrol and parking police... no offense intended.

This is a common scam usually found on Craigslist. I strung one of them along and contacted my local police dept. Basically I was told there are just too many of these scumbags and since most of them are from abroad the police are not interested unless you have already been taken. Apparently even the FBI are overwhelmed with these guys. If I see it on Craigslist, I flag it. At least it makes them re-list.

Just out of shear morbid curiosity I looked him up in the army white pages on army knowledge online (AKO), No results so Mr Douchbag is not a member of the US Army.

If that pisses you off, check this bitch out! Man, the nerve! What's wrong with people?!?

Another of the responses to one of the common online scams:

"Hi, I am emailing you regarding the 2003 Land Rover Range Rover HSE that I have for sale. The SUV is in perfect condition , with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (no smoking). It has 61,000 miles, automatic transmission, 4 Wheel drive. I have a clear and clean title for it , no liens or loans ready to be signed and notarized on your name. I'm selling my son's SUV, who died in Iraq two months ago and I want to get rid of it asap because the sight of it makes me think of him often and often and the pain is too great . Put yourself in my shoes and you'll do the same (selling the SUV of your dead son, no offense) !!! As you probably noticed, the final price that I want for this SUV is $4,999.00
I'm located in Memphis, TN (the SUV is here with me) right now because I got a new job here. I will make the deal only to eBay. I am a member of the eBay Buyer Protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I won't be getting any money. I need to know if you are interested in buying it so I can ask eBay to send you the details on how this works. If interested please include in your next email your contact info for eBay ( full name, full address and phone number) so we can get things started.Thank you, Angela Breeden"

If you're that interested in finding out more about the D90, you can always contact Hennessey LR, looks like they have 3 dealerships in Georgia. Those appear to be their photos taken at the dealership when they sold it. The D90 isn't currently listed on their site.

Just ran his name, there are no personnel in the US Army, on any status (Comp 1 (active) or Comp 2 (Reserve / NG) with the last name of Sitherwood.

Everything these days is without any honor. Everyone wants something for nothing. There are great deals out there sometimes. I just got a custom rear roll cage for my European defender for $200. Who buys a vehicle privately without seeing it? Jerk

------ Follow up post added February 10th, 2011 10:31 AM ------

People just don't get it. Anyone can have a watch, There aren't a lot of defenders out there. Anyone have a realistic total as to how many are in the USA? I say less than 10,000, European and NAS. I'd be less suspicious of this dude's car if he said 30k. Anyone can vouch to have one of these cars is special and imagine getting it and then not getting it. I'm a cop and a very level headed cop but the only thing that would save him was that it would take me forever to get to him. I want to be buried in mine with a bottle of jack and my favorite porno. But that is just me.
