Magnaflow Cat Back: $466

I just bought a stainless cat-back Magnaflow muffler for $466, new, including free shipping.

This is the part: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/d...rtnumber=16711

This is where I bought it: http://www.performancepeddler.com/de...CT_ID=MAG16711

Retails for $821, then they have an advertised price of $635, then at checkout I used code "clubgp" and that knocked another $150 off. Total of $466.

Maybe too good to be true, we'll see when/if the package arrives.

Greg

Same website has the Borla cat back for $644 using the code.

They even have a video that demonstrates the sound of the Magnaflow on a Defender:

http://www.magnaflow.com/04sound/04trucks.asp#

Take it with a grain of salt, my crappy speakers don't do it any favors,.

Hey Greg,

Sounds like you got a good deal to me, you bought the whole pre-made exhaust, not just a muffler, right? I'd be interested to hear your impressions of the quality, install and performance once you have it on, as well as see some photos of how it exits. Thanks..

wondering which stainless alloy they used -listing doesn't say and there are a bunch. Keep in mind its stainless not stainfree- I've seen stainless exhausts rust out and lots of non-316 stainless get crusty on boats. Certain stainless alloys dont do well in a salty environment.

Well, it comes with a "Lifetime Warranty" and the website claims it will "never rust". We may know better, but it sounds like if it does rust, they will replace it.

This is the response I got from Magnaflow:

"MagnaFlow uses 300 grade stainless for our mirror finished tips and muffler shells and 400 grade stainless on all of our tubing and mufflers. 400 grade stainless contains some carbon and iron content which makes it magnetic."

I plan on doing a thorough review of the entire process. More to follow.

Well, I am very happy.

The muffler and tailpipe from Magnaflow arrived in about 7 days, free ground shipping from CA. It installed in about an hour, considering I had to drill out one of the muffler flange bolts.

The sound is very nice, not too loud but still a nice rumble to it. I couldn't really notice any performance increase, but we'll see on my next fill-up.

I'll add some pics tomorrow.

Hey Greg any idea how it compares to a Borla? I havent owned my D90 long but I think the Borla is too loud. Id go to a magnaflow if it was quieter and I didnt lose any performance.

I know the Magnaflow is quieter than a Borla, but louder than stock. For me, the sound is just right, a little rumble you can hear, but it goes away if you are not paying attention to it.

I am not sure about the performance difference between the two tho'. I have felt an improvement in performance over the stock setup I had on there previously. They claim it should be around 10% over stock, but without a dyno I have no way of knowing. I would guess that the difference in performance between the Borla and the Magnaflow can't be that much.

One difference is also the Borla tucks into the wheel well a little better, so there is less of a chance for damage coming off a rock or something.

years ago I did a tune up plugs wires cap rotor and the magnaflow and my truck would pull hills a lot better and fuel mileage went up. There is a neglible increase in dare I say "performance".

Why don't you just have an exhaust shop install a Magnaflow and fab a tail pipe to your liking?

The 110 has two mufflers and the previous owner did some weird routing. I think it is too close to the boge. I need someone to take a good pic of a NRP 110 exhaust for me to use as a base.

I had a shop just cut off that second muffler, (What is it for anyway?) They put on a flowmaster and a new pipe and I always pass smog no problems. I got the bigger flowmaster so its not so loud. Feels and sounds fantastic.
