Knoll Barcelona Chairs - Advice Needed

Looking for some marketing/sales advice. I have two Knoll Barcelona chairs that I bought from my company. They're killer chairs and retail for $11k. I paid way south of that. I've posted on Craigslist in Dallas with limited success. I didn't think I'd find the right buyer on CL anyway. eBay is my next stop, but how would you recommend me listing to maximize profit, but not pay high fees for a reserve auction? Just looking for any new/good thoughts from the community regarding selling online.

Original mid century or reproduction? I had good luck selling mid century stuff on consignment with dealers but then again that stuff is very hot in Venice and of course you have to pay a premium fee to not deal with tire kickers etc.

These are the real deal. They were purchased from Knoll for our corporate headquarters. I may inquire around to some higher end consignment stores. Unfortunately we don't have those in backwoods east Texas. Maybe I'll target the Austin area or Dallas.

Wife was a Knoll dealer so here is what she had to say…

Look at production date - if vintage (1950's-1060's build dates) = value and should be shopped around to auction house/ vintage furniture dealers. You can call knoll with a Serial Number if needed.

Assuming not vintage but a current production then the used market is really an ebay market for best value - figure out crating and shipping before you list the item. Original color-way (chrome/black) is the most sought after, but knockoff versions in the market diminish the potential sale price as many folks don't really understand the difference in build quality between an original and a knockoff. Commercial grade materials (thicker leather, sturdier foam, heavier threads, etc…) will last much longer than a knockoff but most who are shopping for the style at a value are not really buying for long term ownership.

How much are you asking?

Ottomans or just chairs?

Wow, thanks for all the information. These are not vintage, production date was 1/18/2000. The cushions still have the manufacturer date from Knoll fortunately. Guess it's kind of cool they may be some of the first Barcelona chairs this century! I'm not sure what I was going to price them for. I only have two chairs, I don't have the ottomans. The color is brown (sort of a red brown). There's a wide range on eBay so I'm thinking about starting around $5,500 to $6k which would make them $3k a piece or about 54% discount over a new chair. They're in top notch condition. No tears or wear in the cushions. All the straps are in place. Did your wife have any thoughts/suggestions on pricing?

Items from DWR and Knoll that are not from the desired vintage years typically sell used in the 60%+ off. When we stage new units here in NYC we typically get 40% back on the initial investment.

That's about where I wanted to be. My bottom line is/would be $4,500 which is 40% of retail without tax -- even less with tax.

You're at 40% off, used non vintage furniture tends to trade at the 60% level.

Maybe I'm looking at the math wrong, I'm hoping to get $4,500 which is 60% off the MSRP of $11,000 or today's chair price right?

In the post above I meant my price was 40% of retail, or 60% off of retail.

Setting math aside. What are people willing to pay for it?

Not sure of your math or theory on "discount", but economically speaking you can't claim to discount price based on a brand new items price for a 15 year old item. The discount (if at all) needs to be to the current price of said 15year old item which from experience ranges in the $4k (+/-$1k).
I also have people that deal with this stuff and they echo what mybluett's wife stated.

I think we're all saying the same thing. I also think Thomas is right, they'll go with what the market dictates people are willing to pay. Original post was to try and figure out if eBay was the best course, which it sounds like it will be. I'm going to try and list them tonight.

Condition is excellent. There are no rips or tears and all of the straps are tight and intact. The color is Brown. Almost a chocolate color with a slight hint of red maybe like a cayenne and it. They were used in the lobby of our corporate headquarters and so they didn't get a lot of traffic. Let me know if I can take any other pictures or if you want to talk about them further. The leather is also in perfect condition. There's no rips no scrapes or no scuffs. I can also work with you on shipping. I actually used uship it to get them delivered in the first place.

How much for the Grand Prix de Monaco book behind it? I'll be over there in a few weeks.

Good eye, however given they're on used at Amazon for $25, I probably wouldn't sell it for that! The cooler book in that stack is the Driving Ambition: The Official Inside Story of the McLaren F1 by Doug Nye. It even has the original folded poster. That's a collector book!

I can give you 40% of what they go for on Amazon, or 60% discount off from what they go for on Amazon. Whichever you prefer.
