Geez! You had it right the first time! What a steal! Lost value because of all the goodies on it and not being bone stock. Do you happen to remember what the continental convt. sold for or is it still yet to come?

I agree the bolt on stuff doesn't help but its super clean and can't help thinking if it was any other color it would of gone for more.

no i wasn't watching.. my cousin just texted to tell me.

The hood diamond plate is awful.

I would say the color adds value as it was special for 97.

I would think the roof rack and it being red would actually help it at Barrett Jackson. Now if it had late model black Range Rover 20" rims and more lift it might have gone for more :D

I watched a little of the auction last night and saw a FJ40 go across the line. Really clean but flashy large diameter rims didn't do it for me. The commentators were a little off on talking about it: stumbling on the Old Man Emu name and lift specs and calling the mud terrains "knobby tires".

Humm, I have to say I think that is a very good selling price. If I'm correct, that Monza red was the rarest that year. It has very low miles and is the only year of the automatic..(I know,, but there is value in that). Strip the diamond plate and reclaim and it'll be a gem.. 40k miles!

I hate my automatic tranny but she's my girl..

I'd always heard Monza Red was rare.

I believe there were only 102 Monza red in 1997 for Soft Tops. Like I said, the rarest that year. The previous yrs for soft tops were Portifino Red. However, 1997 was the only year for Portifino in the Hard Top. I think that's right but open for correction.

Check your numbers... sounds like you're quoting SW numbers

"It was posted on the the CSO list that the following was the distribution of Station Wagon colors"
341 Green
326 White
209 Blue
102 Red

147 Red soft tops on this page alone

Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Defender NAS VIN Registry:1997 Defender 90 Automatic (Soft Top and Station Wagon) (NAS)

you could call it "rare"... or you could read it as the least desirable... hence the lowest number produced.

no way to prove my theory but i maintain if that identical truck was Arles or Connie it would of sold for more

I've never seen a Monza Red next to a Portofino in comparable condition.... how do they differ?

Less desirable then and now are very different. Time and again with collectibles, things that didn't sell well tend to become more collectible as time goes on. Arles was considered a poor seller in 94 hence no 95s.

I would say monza is worth a premium. You never even see them for sale.

You are right. Thanks for the correction. Gotta say, If I had the choice I'd be driving an Arles Blue..

It doesn't present well. The average guy who comes to spend money sees this as a truck with a bunch of off road crap bolted on. For comparison ECR just sold a very stock looking one Rovers For Sale by ECR for roughly 80k with more miles.

I watched last night and didn't think the color commentary on Defenders was very good -- the guys seemed out of their element when it rolled across the stage. I agree, the bolt on stuff didn't help, but if it was 40k documented miles and AZ clean underneath it should've brought more given recent sales.
