1986 Defender RHD 142 (130) ????

Full disclosure not mine but would like it to be!

Found this on Fleabay today thought it was interesting would love some feedback in light of recent developments on if you guys think this could be imported into the USA...

Before everyone goes on a rant my feeling is no because of the 200TDI but would be interested in buying it if one of you importers think it can be done.

My understanding is that if the tires wear out in 25 years and need to be replaced with new ones, then it won't get through Customs.

Is it still ok to refill the fuel tank, or is that a grey area now too?

Good question, but I was also told that if your vehicle measures in 'miles per gallon' it's too new. That said, it can only be imported if it gets 8 'hogs head to the rod' as a unit of measurement.

Personally I love that unit of measurement, means my 2.5N/A does about 419,667 rods to the hogshead.

If that is the case then my NAS gets...still about 8.

The listing says it was stretched from a stock 110 to a 142 by Land Rover Special Vehicles in 1986 after the factory build ... don't LRSV builds count as original?

Doesn't matter, the VIN says it has a V8 Petrol engine in it not a 4 cyclinder diesel.

So could you get the diesel taken out again and a 3.5 or 3.9 (which ever it had) V8 put back in before it was imported, then it would be original spec?

Would still be a risk I think with the stretch but then again it does not matter because could not get the V8 registered in CA with our crappy smog laws.

I missed that on first reading. All 127's were built by Special Vehicles and used 110 vins. This one would require a letter from special vehciles. The fact that its a 200tdi means the engine is 21yrs old. I have imported trucks from Haks before but this one would require some leg work first.

Doug,

Whats the worst case scenario if this was denied entry can we ship back at our own expense?

I think I am headed to the NL this weekend. I can check it out if any wishes. A friend of mine knows the truck and said it has a fair amount of chassis rust. I'm looking at another he is offering...bone stock.

If you win your fight with Customs to retain ownership, your only remedy would be to ship it back @ your expense.

Far better tact would be to get prior approval from EPA and DOT which is what I meant by preliminary legwork.
