Stereo install

I've been an audiophile for many years and since my d90 is going to be my dd I want to put a decent system in it. I'm wondering what you folks have done for stereo installs... Where you have mounted speakers and amps etc... Looking for something more than the standard speakers at the very bottom of the door panels...

I got rid of the back speakers... running 4 channel amp... speakers in door and tweeters up front... plenty of places... I put them in the AC vents... no cutting. And sub on 2 channels bridged behind center console. Simple and easy. There are more custom ways to do it but I like this b/c I can easily remove the sub for more space.

Sounds great and I can turn it loud enough to cancel out out road and engine noise.

But I come from the belief that a sound system should duplicate a live show... all sound in front of you.

What size of speakers are you running in the doors? Rears are really for imaging... Fronts set your sound stage...

I am pretty satisfied with my stereo system in my daily driver D90, I have some 6" or 6.5" Boston Acoustic speakers in the door panels, some sort of Kenwood speakers in rear and some tweeters behind both front seats in the corners kind of where the capping meets the doors seals but of course inside the truck. I also have the stock Clarion radio with an auxiliary cable option attached so I can play music from my Iphone. The OE radio + ipod dock I got from John at gb4x4radios.com sounds great, I would like to add a subwoofer someday though. I have a soft top D90 though, so your LE should be much quieter, so I'm told. Shoot John an email, he has an LE as well which has a great sounding system in it, I've heard it. Not sure how much your wanting to keep the "stock" look but I think the Clarion radios+Ipod capability that John offers are a great compromise. I too am somewhat of an audiophile but have not yet figured out a feasible way of installing a Rega turntable in my 90, ha. Hope that helps.

6.5 in the door... I think 1 or 3/4 in tweets and 1x 12" sub. Could go down but I've had that sucker for over 10 years now and I just can't part with it... old Kicker Competition and still holds up great. I used to have 2 in a different truck so now one is in the garage if this ever blows.

Sony head unit... not ideal but still best bluetooth options IMO. Older Fosgate 4 channel amp.

Wow... I wonder if placing your woofer in the ac like that would damage the speaker?

If your talking about the rear upper speakers, I don't think it is or was an AC system part.
I bet it's a custom piece like the lower rears.

As an experienced audiophile what your thoughts on building a system ?

Fourth picture in there is a speaker in what looks like the ac unit under the dash...

As far as a system goes, I'm going to avoid anything with a transport and go strictly digital. I can imagine what all the bouncing around will do.

I'm going to be basing my sound system in the 110 around a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7". 8 gig of built in storage 32 gig SD card. It has built in GPS, google nav etc. Run that to a old school PPI 5 channel amp and either 6 Boston acoustic or polk audio speakers. With two 10" kicker comps in the back. Should be able to hear it over the road noise lol

To a decent CD player ( forget the stylus lol). Alpine has a deck that has burrbrown 24 bit dac and I'm going to use it. I'll probably go with an audison amp and four sets of focal krx2 seperates. Would love to go with the three way krx3 s but could figure where to put them.

------ Follow up post added October 28th, 2012 08:17 PM ------

How are you going to get the signal from the tab to the amp?

I have two choices, I can use the headphone jack or the blue tooth that is built in to a blue tooth adapter that hooks to the amp with RCA's. The sounds quality is a bit better with the blue tooth but takes a touch more wiring. I'll have to wire in a power inverter either way though to keep things powered

Funny, I would have thought that the sq would have been better with a direct connection vs Bluetooth...

I found I get better volume with the blue tooth and the overall sound is pretty equal. In the 110 I think the volume will be more important.

When using BT for stereo, what happens when the phone rings? Can you use your BT headset?

Well in my case my phone is a separate item, so I can answer it normally and use the bluetooth headset if I can find it lol.

This is one of the first items on my to do list when I get the 110 home I'll be sure to post up a small projects thread of how it works out.

You are right....and I agree, it looks like a problem waiting to happen.

I use my iphone and ipad for music....

I wish there was a way to skip the headunit entirely...and just bluetooth the data to the amp/speakers...i have no need for a radio or disc player.

It would free up needed dash space, as well as not temp thieves.

That's the factory speaker location with A/C.
