Safari Gard rear tire carrier door handle?

I bought their rear tire carrier. I have 2 gas cans on the shelf they provide. I can't get to the door handle. They never sent me the piece of metal to move the handle out. I am so happy I got the carrier installed and now adjusted correctly that I will deal with the lack of a brake light adapter and door handle piece myself. I'll let MasterCard deal with the lack of receipt.

So for the door handle, is there something cool I can do to move the latch out besides drilling a hole in my door handle? I have access to a top custom sheet metal facility and will go way overboard for something that has a simple solution. Can the whole mechanism be taken apart and put some other handle on?
